The Fourth of July Picnic

The Great Hall and the Entrance Hall are lined with long tables with delicious food and treats. The rows are organized. The first contains any meat you could have dreamed of; the second holds all the fruits and vegetables in the world; the third holds snack foods like chips and salsa; the last holds treats and deserts. Students, staff, and parents are allowed to get as much food as they like. The dishes refill themselves as they are emptied. Everyone is to proceed immediately to the Entrance courtyard, where round tables have been set up, after they get their food. The students from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang have been invited as well. All are welcome.

Monica was ready. Her first time at a different school. Her hair was braided down the side of her face, making her look just as young as she was. The young girl was following the older students who strode behind her head mistress. Monica was looking around the grounds that they were walking on, finding it atrocious. The ground was mushy with the recent rain, and she was afraid of getting her expensive shoes muddy. Monica was jumping from dry spot to dry spot until they reached the castle.

She looked at it's old walls and again, her lips pursed. She didn't know what to make of this school, and was stuck just staring at it with a blank expression. It was a different world, far different from her school. Monica wondered if the students of this school would have some type of entertainment waiting for them when they got into the grand halls. To her dismay, the only tables lined with walls of food stood, looking at them. Monica glanced from table to table, almost glaring at all of the food. She wasn't really in the mood for eating, so she decided to walk over to one of the areas by herself.

Smoothing her skirt underneath her, Monica sat down and looked around the dining area once more. She didn't know what to make of the school, even after being in it for a whole ten minutes. The witch found it fairly dirty, and old. Monica didn't think it was proper to be sitting alone, and really wished that someone would sit by her. "Huhh..." she moaned, corssing her arms.

I walk out into the Entrance Courtyard with a plate of food, and look around for someone I didn't know to sit with. That was my plan. To make a new friend. I was in a sparkly dress. My parents said it would be nice to dress up for a change. And then they gave me a present. And well, you can guess what it was. I see a girl. She must be from Beauxbatons, I thought as I walk over there. I sit down and pick up one of my three slices of watermelon. I decide I might as well greet myself, since my plan is to meet a new friend. I touch my red necklace with the raven silhouette ( why it was red, I'll never know) on it for good luck as I introduce myself, "Hello! I'm Ruthie. Ruthie Witz. Nice to meet you."

I take a bite of my watermelon. It was juicy and watery, just the way I like it. Watermelon is my favorite food after all. After I finish the slice of watermelon, I move on to my hamburger. I didn't like hotdogs at all. Another thing I was wondering was why we were celebrating an American holiday in England. I guess they just wanted us to experience different cultures or something like that. "Guess what I heard!"

Monica jumped at the voice of another witch, scaring her a little more than the idea of spending a week in Hogwarts did. She didn't know if it had been a good idea for her to come, and was beginning to reconsider it. After all, she could be sitting with her parents, like half of the other students from her school were. But no, she was in a castle, surrounded by people she didn't know. Turning her 11 year old attention back to the girl, she replied,"Bonjour, mon nom est Monica." She wondered if the girl spoke French, and was contemplating whether to ask or not. "Parlez-vous français?" Monica asked, her eyebrows forming together slightly.

She knew a little English, picked up from her trips with her family. At school they were teaching some of the students the language, but Monica didn't take that class. " Er... nice to meet you Ruthie." the witch said slowly, her French accent thick. Every word seemed slurred and cautious, and Monica didn't like it. She wanted to know the English language better, so she could actually have a fluid conversation. After watching Ruthie eat her sandwich, she replied, "Ah ... what?"

It was true; I only knew that much. I didn't make it a habit to learn other languages. I take a delicate bite of my hamburger and set it down on the plate. I look around; so far no one else sat at the round table to seat eight. I say, "Well, I don't know if it's true or not, but I heard that George Weasley is coming to make fireworks. I hope it really does happen, or this picnic is going to be a disappointment. I heard the last time a Weasley made fireworks it was a real blast, like a dragon breathing fire or something. Really creeped one of the teachers out."

Monica smiled softly at the 16 year old and nodded. "Ce n'est pas grave - er, that's okay." she said, finding it difficult not to speak French. "Sorry, I don't speak much English..." Monica admitted sadly. She really wished that she could get a tutor or something to teach her English. Running a hand over her light brown braid, the girl sighed once more. She leaned in and set her head on her hand, looking out at the tables.

Monica was only half-listening to Ruthie. She didn't mean to be so rude, but she was very bored. "Cool, I think." she said with another smile. "Will it be safe? I don't want to get blown up..." Monica said, sounding nervous. She thought this school was old, but safe at least. That is what she knew about Hogwarts, it was safe. Now, she was rethinking that.

I started at her it disbelief. Of course it was safe, this was Hogwarts after all, and besides, nobody had died last time. I try and decide how to answer her question, but instead of answering intellectually, I say something that sounds dumb, "Of course it's safe!" Not only did my answer make me sound dumb, but it also sounded defensive. Well, I was defending my school, so I guess that was okay. I twirl my hair and start eating my food again. I glance at her plate; she hasn't eaten at all. I observe aloud, "You haven't eaten."

Monica felt the older girl's eyes on her, and returned the stare. She felt bad for saying that, because Ruthie seemed defensive about it. "Sorry if I seemed, well... I've never seen fireworks. What are they?" she asked cautiously. Monica didn't know if it seemed awkward to ask that, but it was true. She had never seen, or heard of, fireworks. The witch looked at the tables of food once more, finding them being covered with students and parents grabbing food.

Monica blinked and returned her brown eyed gaze to Ruthie. She looked at the girl's red hair, and wondered if it was dyed or not. The witch knew it was rude to think like that, but she could wonder none the less. "Oh, I already ate, I'm sure the food is good." Monica said with a nod. She didn't want to insult Ruthie any more than she felt that she did.

"Fireworks are like bursts of color that explode in the air. It's really beautiful how they work, really. I hope they really do happen. Fireworks caused by magic are even more beautiful than those caused by muggles. Oh, I see. The food is amazing. It always is." I whip out my wand and cast a spell causing a tiny explosion of colors to erupt from my wand. I was showing her a tiny example of what a firework was. I assure her, The real think is ten times better, trust me. Oh, look! Fireworks!"

I point my finger at an explosion that just happened near the Forbidden Forest. They had to make sure it wasn't too close to the school. I hoped the eleven year old didn't miss it, or she wold have to wait. I stared in awe at the firework as it faded off into the distance. I whisper one, single word, "Beautiful . . ."

Monica listened to Ruthie's explaination of what a firework was. The things sounded like dancing fire, in different colors. "Oh, they sound nice." Monica said with a smug smile. She didn't want to seem like a stick in the mud, but that's what she felt like. She watch to where the 16 year old had pointed, and was awestruck. A brilliant flash of color seemed to explode in the sky, leaving the French girl speechless.

Her eyes glistened with the flashing lights as the whole room focused on the forest that shone in the horizon. Everyone fell silent, until the sparking stopped. Then, it seemed nothing had happened, because everyone went back to their conversations. Still, Monica looked to the sky above the trees, hoping the lights would return. "Charmant..." she said, her breath still taken away from the colors of light in the sky. Monica hadn't even noticed that she spoke french, and not the English that she should've said in front of Ruthie.

"Er . . . I don't know what Chramant means," I say, disappointedly. I hated not knowing what stuff meant. I waited for another firework to come. Sometimes, it took awhile with these things. I finished my hamburger and my watermelon and looked at my plate. It still had potato chips and mixed fruit. I didn't eat much food that was unhealthy, usually a lot of fruit and vegetables and meat. That was basically it. I say, "Sometimes it takes a while for the next burst of firework to come and sometimes it doesn't."
